The Responsible Down Standard (RDS) inspires the down and feather industry to treat ducks and geese humanely and rewards organizations that lead the way. The standards also provide a way for companies and consumers to know what ingredients are in the products they buy.

We ensure that down and feathers do not cause unnecessary harm to animals.

  • Ensure to the highest possible standard that down and feathers don’t come from animals that have been subjected to unnecessary harm.
  • Incentivize down and feather suppliers to treat ducks and geese humanely.
  • Ensure strong chain of custody for certified materials as they move along the supply chain.

Tracing down and feathers through to finished products.

  • Animal welfare protection: Respect for the welfare of birds and geese, from hatching to slaughter. The Five Freedoms of animal welfare are respected.
  • Live-plucking and force-feeding prohibition: Any removal of down or feathers from live birds (live-plucking or molt-harvesting) is prohibited. Force-feeding is also prohibited.
  • Credible certification: A professional, third-party certification body audits each stage in the supply chain.
  • RDS logo: All products label the RDS certification logo.
